Chiefs Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali has been suspended by the NFL for the team’s season-opener against the Falcons.
The league announced the suspension Monday but did not disclose details other than to say Hali had violated its policy on substance abuse.
Hali is allowed to participate in preseason practices and games. The Chiefs play the Seahawks on Friday night.
“Tamba’s situation is unfortunate,” Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said. “Obviously we are disappointed and will miss him during the suspension, but the NFL’s policies are very clear and we respect the league’s decision in this matter.”
The 28-year-old Hali made his first Pro Bowl last season, posting 12 sacks, four forced fumbles and a career-high 66 total tackles.
When the 2006 first-round draft pick sits out Week 1, it will be just his second game missed in his six-year career.
